Week 1 Winter 2024 - Project Competiton Overview

Welcome Back!

It has been quite a while since our last update on this blog.

However, we've got some exciting updates and news to share.

Over the past couple of months, we've been on a journey to completely revamp our online presence. From breaking free of the constraints of Wix to creating more self-hosted options for our projects to exploring the many different needs of our public-facing website.

With that said, this all culminated when, after some deep thought and discussion, we decided to finally, archive our Wix site. If you want to learn more about why we made this decision, click here. In short, we believe that as an App Development Club, a site like Wix doesn't support our various ambitions and needs as we continue to grow as a community.

Most importantly, our club kicked off the Winter 2024 term and project!

Winter Term 2024 Club Project

Our Winter 2024 term project has officially begun!

For the Winter term, we'll be doing a term-long project competition within our club community.

Overview - App Development Competiton

This project competition invites you to create any app development project you can imagine. Truly, the possibilities are endless! The project you create doesn't need to specifically be a mobile or web application. It can really, be any of these platforms:

  • Desktop

  • Command Line

  • Games

  • IoT

  • Robotics

  • + so much more!

Whether you prefer to work solo, or in a team of up to three, this competition is your chance to flex those app development chops and shine!

There will be two competitive sections for our term project:

  • Beginner - little to no coding experience, basic CS knowledge

  • Advanced - experience building projects and deploying software

We'll allow you the discretion of choosing which group you more closely align with, but on our end, we think if you've taken a >= 300-level course, you're advanced.

During midterms, we'll be having a midpoint progress check. At the end of the term, (Week 10/Finals Week) there will be a showcase for each team to demonstrate their project to the club. (1-3 minute video showcasing the final work)

The prize breakdown for the competition is as follows:

Beginner Track

  • 1st Overall - $75

  • 2nd Overall - $50

  • 3rd Overall - $25

Advanced Track

  • 1st Overall - $75

  • 2nd Overall - $50

  • 3rd Overall - $25

* - Cash prizes will be in the form of Amazon gift cards (1 per member)

All projects will be judged via community vote. Everyone will be able to vote for their favorite project in both the advanced and beginner categories. However, you may not vote for your project.

Also, if you're up for a challenge, you can earn a "bonus vote" by developing a full-stack application. Don't know what that means? Here's some more info. The "bonus" will be awarded in the form of an extra vote, as project submissions will be judged by you guys, the members!

Rules & Requirements

  • Teams of 1-3 people (You can find a team on our Discord in the #find-a-team channel)

  • The submission cannot be the completion of an in-progress project

  • Each submission should contain a video demonstrating the project in its essence

  • The project can be anything you'd like (Desktop App, Mobile App, Web.....)

  • The submission must have the full version control history published & accessible

  • If you use a template, YouTube tutorial, or any other existing resources, please note that in the documentation/README.md of the project

  • All project submissions must be made by the Friday of Week 9 (March 15th, 2024)

  • You must be a member of our club in IdealLogic to win prizes

With that said, our team is extremely excited to see what you guys build. Happy hacking!
